PERSONAL PROFILE

Linrui Hu.

Scriptwriter & Director

My work brings together scriptwriting, directing and visual storytelling.

In Trumpet, I explore ordinary workers' lives amid social change. In Gambling Party, I use dramatic reversals, performance and visual cues to reveal conflicting intentions.

Alongside these films, my experience in cinematography, lighting and production informs how I take a story from the written scene to the screen.

From December 2024 to March 2025, I worked as a Camera Assistant on Ta Xue Xun Zong, a television drama produced by Youku.

Steadicam Training

JANUARY 2025 · CONTINUING PRACTICE

Learning through movement.

In January 2025, I attended Deng Lu’s Steadicam training camp to learn Steadicam operating techniques. I have continued practising since the camp, developing a practical foundation in Steadicam operation.

Trumpet

Scriptwriter & Director

In late-1990s Northeast China, factory cashier Li Wei refuses to take part in the embezzlement of public funds. The new factory director, the administration chief and his own apprentice conspire to frame him, costing him his job.

Creative approach

The film looks beyond one man's dismissal to the lives of ordinary workers caught in a changing era. Li Wei loses his place in the factory, but those who remain are also subject to forces beyond their control.

I wrote and revised the screenplay, developed the shot lists and storyboards, and directed the performances. Working with the cinematography team, I shaped the film's visual approach and also undertook part of the production planning, budgeting and scheduling.

Gambling Party

Three gamblers sit down to play, each with a hidden agenda. Two plan to cheat the third, unaware that their target has arranged a raid of his own: his cousin, posing as a police officer, will seize the stakes.

Creative approach

The comedy unfolds through successive reversals, as each new piece of information changes how the audience reads the situation. A Korean-language phone call reveals the collusion, drawing on one performer's Korean Chinese background from Yanbian.

Facial expressions, framing and visual cues carry the deception alongside the dialogue. I developed the screenplay and storyboards, then directed the actors' blocking and performances to shape the timing of each reveal.

I worked as Director of Photography, translating the script into a visual plan and operating the camera to support the director’s storytelling vision.

Creative approach

I designed shot compositions, camera movements and lighting setups in collaboration with the director and art department. On set, I adjusted exposure, lens choices and filters, refining lighting and framing with the director and gaffer. My work also included colour grading and compositional refinements.

Gaffer

As Gaffer, I worked with the director of photography to develop lighting that supported the mood and visual style of each scene.

Creative approach

I positioned and adjusted lighting equipment, balancing intensity, colour temperature and diffusion. I supervised a small lighting crew and coordinated with the camera and sound departments. During rehearsals, I adapted the lighting to the actors’ blocking to maintain visual consistency.

As Producer, I coordinated the practical work behind the film, managing the budget, production schedule and communication between departments.

Creative approach

I tracked expenditure, negotiated cast and crew arrangements, organised payroll and obtained location permissions. During filming, I monitored progress, resolved logistical issues and coordinated the camera, lighting, art and sound departments to keep production on schedule and within budget.

Trumpet

Scriptwriter & Director

I wrote and revised the screenplay, refining dialogue, scene structure and character arcs to explore the lives of ordinary workers amid social change. As director, I translated the script into visual storytelling, worked with the cinematography team on framing and visual style, and guided the actors through blocking and emotional cues. I supervised the creative process from pre-production through post-production and also undertook part of the budgeting, scheduling and production coordination.

Gambling Party

Scriptwriter & Director

I wrote and refined the screenplay around successive reversals, using dialogue, concealed intentions and carefully timed revelations to build the comedy. As director, I shaped framing, camera movement, visual pacing and the actors’ performances. A Korean-language phone call, facial expressions and visual cues work together to reveal the collusion and guide what the audience understands at each stage.

The Loop

I design shot compositions, camera movements and lighting plans in support of the director’s vision. My responsibilities include camera operation, exposure, lens choices and colour grading.

I collaborate with the director of photography on lighting, adjusting intensity, colour temperature and diffusion. I lead the lighting crew and adapt setups to the actors’ blocking.
